Requirements to Qualify for Disability Benefits with Arrhythmia

There is an official name for “Social Security disability benefits.” That name is Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI. The Social Security Administration manages the SSDI program, which is designed to help disabled Americans who once worked and paid taxes. If your condition meets the requirements of the SSA’s “listing of impairments,” you may qualify for benefits.

To receive meet the listing for arrhythmia, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Your arrhythmia must be recurrent and associated with syncope or near syncope

You must experience recurrent episodes of arrhythmia in order to qualify for benefits. In particular, the SSA states that you must experience recurrent episodes of “syncope or near syncope.”

Syncope means a loss of consciousness, or fainting. If you experience recurrent episodes of arrhythmia that result in fainting or near-fainting, you may meet this requirement.

  • Your arrhythmia must not be related to reversible causes

Your arrhythmia must not be caused by temporary, fixable causes. The SSA describes some potential reversible causes. These include electrolyte abnormalities and drug toxicity.

  • Your condition must exist despite prescribed treatment

In order to meet this requirement, you must experience recurrent arrhythmia even while undergoing prescribed treatment for it. This can include prescription medication, a pacemaker, or an implanted cardiac defibrillator.

  • You must have medical evidence in the form of testing

You will need to provide medical evidence of your recurrent arrhythmia and associated fainting. This evidence should come in the form of medical tests. One common test uses a Holter monitor, which measures your heart activity. Tilt-table testing can also help diagnose your condition. This involves laying on a table which is then tilted upright and can help doctors locate causes of fainting.

A skilled Social Security disability lawyer can help you put together a claim that completely reflects your condition and needs.

How Social Security Disability Benefits Can Help You

Recurrent arrhythmia can make it extremely difficult to hold a steady job. The condition often results in fainting, which can put you at serious risk for injuries. Fortunately, the SSDI program is designed to help individuals whose disabilities and medical conditions prevent them from working.

If you worked and earned money in the past, you most likely had Social Security taxes withheld from your paycheck. Paying those taxes was your way of “paying in” to the Social Security system. Now, you have the right to be paid back under SSDI if you have a qualifying condition.

Do I receive cash payments under SSDI?

Monthly cash payments are the standard form of SSDI benefits. They are also what most people think of when they think of the term “disability benefits.” If the SSA decides that you are eligible for benefits, you will soon begin to receive monthly checks to help cover your basic needs. The amount you can receive in this monthly check varies depending on your work history.

Past-due and retroactive payments pay you SSDI benefits for the months before and during the application process. If the SSA awards you benefits, you may be eligible for these types of benefits. An experienced attorney can help you make sure you get all the benefits you deserve.

Medicare benefits  are a less well-known part of SSDI benefits. Once you receive 24 months’ worth of standard, past-due, and retroactive SSDI payments, you are automatically enrolled in Medicare. This can improve your access to healthcare for your condition.
