Diseases that Qualify for Social Security Disability Benefits

Many Utahns with chronic diseases have trouble performing their normal jobs. Not only can a disease disable an individual’s physical and mental capabilities, it can be a huge financial burden. Fortunately, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has created an insurance program for working Americans who suffer from any number of ailments and are unable to work. For a complete description of Social Security Disability Insurance.

Disabling Conditions

This page contains a list of disabling conditions that can be considered severe enough by the Social Security Administration (SSA) to qualify a person for Social Security Disability. These conditions must interfere with an individual’s ability to achieve “gainful employment,” thereby making that person eligible for SSDI or SSI benefits.

A complete listing of possible impairments is found in the SSA’s “Social Security Listing of Impairments,” a manual used by state-run Disability Determination Services (DDS) to determine whether or not a person meets the SSA’s criteria for complete disability. In addition to the Blue Book conditions, individuals may qualify for disability benefits under one of the SSA’s 200+ Compassionate Allowance listings. Through the Compassionate Allowance initiative, claimants suffering from more severe medical conditions may qualify for expedited consideration of their Social Security disability claim, thereby possibly reducing the waiting period before approval.

The following are diseases that may qualify an individual for disability insurance. If you or someone you know is suffering from one of the following diseases, they may be eligible for benefits. When applying for SSDI, make sure to educate yourself on the conditions that need to be met in order to qualify, and the process for applying. If your disease is not listed, it may still covered by disability insurance.
