Can I Get Social Security Disability Benefits with Pulmonary Hypertension?

Pulmonary hypertension can be very serious and prevent you from working. If this happens to you, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. The disability lawyers at Summit Disability Law Group can help you get these benefits.

It is possible to receive Social Security disability benefits with pulmonary hypertension. In order to do so, you must file an application that shows how severe your condition is. Our attorneys work every day to help disabled Utahns file successful applications. To help you understand your case, this page outlines the requirements for successful pulmonary hypertension claims.

Filing a Successful Application for Disability Benefits with Pulmonary Hypertension

The Social Security Administration manages the Social Security Disability Insurance program. This program is what most people think of when they think, “Social Security disability benefits.” In order to qualify for SSDI, you must file a successful application. In order to do this, you must show that your condition meets the SSA’s severity requirements.

Pulmonary hypertension, in general, means high blood pressure in the lungs. In order to qualify for Social Security disability benefits with pulmonary hypertension, you must meet the following requirements.

  • You must be diagnosed with chronic pulmonary hypertension

There are many different types of pulmonary hypertension. You can qualify for benefits if you have any type of the disease, as long as it is medically diagnosed and severe enough.

Pulmonary hypertension is usually diagnosed through pulmonary artery catheterization. This involves placing a long, thin tube with a balloon at the tip through a vein. A doctor can use this to test blood pressure in the heart and lungs. Medical images like X-rays may also be used to confirm a diagnosis.

  • Medical tests must show very high blood pressure in the pulmonary artery

To qualify for benefits, pulmonary artery catheterization must show high blood pressure in the lungs. The catheterization test must take place when you are medically stable. This means that you have not changed medications recently, or had any recent infections, complications, or hospitalizations.

Pulmonary blood pressure is pressure in the pulmonary artery, which transports blood from the right side of the heart to the lungs. If tests show that your average pulmonary blood pressure is 40 mm Hg or greater, you may qualify for benefits.

A successful disability claim is all about the details. An experienced disability lawyer at Summit Disability Law Group will work with you and your doctors to make sure that you have the test results and other evidence you need.

Other Important Requirements for Social Security Disability Benefits

Severe pulmonary hypertension alone is not enough to qualify for disability benefits. The SSDI program is designed to help disabled Americans who previously worked and paid Social Security taxes. So, a work history is required in addition to a severe disability.

How much do you need to work to qualify for disability benefits with pulmonary hypertension? If you are 30 years old, you generally need to have worked at least 5 of the past 10 years. In more specific terms, you need to have worked 20 out of the past 40 quarters. For each quarter you work, you earn a “credit.” Once you earn 20 credits, you may qualify for SSDI.

The amount of your monthly benefit may vary depending on your work and income history.

What Types of Disability Benefits are Available?

When most people think of Social Security disability benefits, they think of monthly checks. It is true that cash benefits are an essential part of SSDI, but they are not the only benefits available. SSDI recipients can also qualify for medical coverage benefits.

  • Cash benefits

If you receive SSDI benefits, you will begin to receive a monthly check. This monthly check is intended to help you cover essential expenses. It will not replace all of your lost income, but it will provide significant help.

Since you likely were unable to work before you applied for benefits, you can receive retroactive cash benefits. These retroactive benefits cover months that you were disabled before you applied for SSDI. You can also receive past-due benefits for the months during the application process.

  • Medical coverage benefits

Once you receive 24 months of SSDI cash benefits, you are automatically enrolled in Medicare. This health coverage benefit can help when you need important medical treatments or procedures.

If you choose to work with Summit Disability Law Group, we will make sure that you get all of the benefits that you are eligible for.
